Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. Although uncommon, mesothelioma is no longer considered rare. A malignant (cancerous) tumour of the mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma. As most mesothelial tumours are cancerous, malignant mesothelioma is often simply called mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma cancer is an aggressive malignancy that spreads over time. The disease attacks vital organs protected by the mesothelium membrane. Simply put, mesothelioma which is commonly referred to as asbestos cancer, is an aggressive cancer caused primarily by the inhalation of dangerous asbestos fibres Mesothelioma can affect any of these cells, but is usually seen in the pleural or peritoneal mesothelium.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer affecting the abdominal cavity, chest cavity, and the region surrounding the heart. Individuals with a history of extended asbestos exposure are at the highest risk for developing malignant mesothelioma. Even a small exposure to this cancer-causing material can result in malignant mesothelioma. However, mesothelioma has a latency of up to thirty-forty years.
